ABOUT
ST. JAMES BAPTIST CHURCH

HISTORY
The Saint James Baptist Church was organized by the Rev. John Angelle James of Macon, Georgia, in April, 1865. The first services were held under a brush arbor on the present site. The first meetings there were started by a group interested in helping the sick and was called The Penny Club, later renamed the Daughters of Benevolence. This group began services without a minister. Eventually, Rev. James started visiting this group and out of this developed the Saint James Missionary Baptist Church.

Five years later in 1870, the land for the church was purchased from the late Richard Bennett for the sum of $24.66 by the following: Willis Green, Alvis Buckner, James Huckaby and James Tolbert, trustees for the First Colored Baptist Church in Forsyth, Georgia. Other deacons and founding fathers serving with Rev. James were Dock Bell, Jeff Goodrum, Joe Watkins, and Gilbert Thrash.

Rev. James served from 1865-1886. Eighteen(18) Pastors have served St. James since then. This includes the late Rev. Adolph Parsons who served St. James faithfully for 61 years as well as our current Pastor, The Rev. Dr. Antonio Proctor, Sr.
